Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise – Windows isn’t activated issue 1 Comment

This is an annoying issue, I just downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and had to face the impossibility to activate it... "Windows isn’t activated” Error Code : 0x8007007B, the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The pre register product key is not good and you basically need to change it using the following command (using administrator privilege" Open a command prompt window slmgr /ipk HGTY3-JVFJH-3B5VD-WZR8D-JDGR8 (Your own product key of course) The old product key will be replaced with the new one and Windows 8 RTM will be activated automatically.

Microsoft Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit 3 Comments

This very big ISO file need to be installed on Windows to be able to use it. Tis toolkit has been design to customize Windows Embedded 8 deployment by giving three softwares : Image Configuration Manager, Module Designer and Windows Embedded Developer Update. The installation is simple, next next ok finish, you just need to know you need to have both 32bit and 64bit ISO DVD of Windows Embedded 8 to be able to package and customize installations. Once the installation is done, the three icon are available on the Metro Desktop.   First stop  the Image Configuration Editor You can build an image by using Image Configuration Editor. If you chose the advanced path for image development, this process will get you started with building an image. Although it takes more time to build an image by using Image Configuration Editor than by using Image Builder Wizard, this tool is the most flexible and versatile way to define your image requirements, especially when you need the image size to remain small.   This has been very easy to create to WinPE media folder, you can create USB key as well. The Module Designer If you wish to add a module and integrate it to you custom deployment, this is quite easy as well :   Windows Embedded Developer Update Windows Embedded Developer Update is an application that you can use to automatically search for, download, and install the latest updates for Windows Embedded 8 Standard. And this is it, I made several custom media ready for deployment and Microsoft kept the good way and keep simple the Embedded software customizations. But this haven't evolve dramatically since many years now, maybe admin tools should evolve as much as Windows Operating System are changing.

This year wasn't as surprising as it has been in the past years on the innovation and "really new stuff". Perhaps this is is because since I'm a CTP I know a lot more on Citrix plan before the announce it but I think the evolution Citrix brings into their product now will still take a year to go and be released and ready to go. Some announces are old already, many things have been announced at Citrix Synergy in San Francisco and many announces made were about products already available since couple of months. Anyway, here is my wrap up so far : ByteMobile is now part of Citrix, acquisition in july (Official Announcement here) over 6 billion mobile devices growing 50%+ mobile data is video & multimedia growth - 25x over the next 5 years This acquisition brings Citrix cloud networking convergence with mobile data a bit further. About what we need to build a cloud, Mark Templeton underline we will soon need to all being ready to build, connect Cloud Infrastructures and Cloud Providers. Most of the enterprise are doing server virtualization ++ built for traditional enterprise apps & client-server compute including a traditional management, then enterprises will need to move on cloud platforms designed around big data, massive scale & next-gen cloud apps with an autonomic management and an open, value added stack. This is where Citrix CloudPortal will enter the game, a layer on to of CloudStack. Citrix vision for the future is 3 clouds, Personal Cloud to empower people, Private Cloud to aggregate and deliver apps and data, Public Cloud to build and connect infrastructures. The 3 PCs. Citrix clearly claims to be the number one partner you need to think when you want to cloudify you network, application, data and devices. And want to lead the new IT to impact the business needs. This is it, I had to live my Synergy remotely from Paris, and this are all the information I could get from Synergy Live and Twitter. Next step will be to digest, analyze and put everything together. I think we have enough new material to play until next Synergy. Citrix just released XenServer 6 with a lot of new features. After few month using the beta (Boston Project) and playing with it on my XenServer @ Home the final release is here and keeps all the very cool features announced with the beta version. Upgrading my XenServer @ home Burning the new iso file was the longest action tonight, I booted my XenServer @ home (Beta Project Boston) and the upgrade has been fast without issue, within 5 minutes I've been able to launch my fist Vms and check everything. Microsoft Windows 8 In a recent blog post about Installing Microsoft Windows 8 on Citrix XenServer 6 beta Project Boston, I explain how to do it because Windows 8 wasn't supported yet and it was a bit tricky to host a Windows 8 virtual machine. With the final release of XenServer 6, Microsoft Windows 8 is installing and running very fine without any specific action, you just need to use a Windows 7 template or a Windows 2008 R2 template, install XenTools and you're good. New Features Integrated Site Recovery (Disaster Recovery). Remote data replication between storage arrays with fast recovery and failback capabilities. Integrated Site Recovery replaces StorageLink Gateway Site Recovery used in previous versions, removes the Windows VM requirement, and works with any iSCSI or Hardware HBA storage repository. Integrated StorageLink. Access to use existing storage array-based features such as data replication, de-duplication, snapshot and cloning. Replaces the StorageLink Gateway technology used in previous editions and removes requirement to run a Windows VM with the StorageLink components. GPU Pass-Through. Enables a physical GPU to be assigned to a VM providing high-end graphics. Allows applications to leverage GPU instructions in XenDesktop VDI deployments with HDX 3D Pro. Virtual Appliance Support (vApp). Ability to create multi-VM and boot sequenced virtual appliances (vApps) that integrate with Integrated Site Recovery and High Availability. vApps can be easily imported and exported using the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) standard. Rolling Pool Upgrade Wizard. Simplify upgrades (automated or semi-automated) to XenServer 6.0 with a wizard that performs pre-checks with a step-by-step process that blocks unsupported upgrades. Microsoft SCVMM & SCOM Support. Manage XenServer hosts and VMs with System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2012. System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2012 will also be able to manage and monitor XenServer hosts and VMs. System Center integration is available with a special supplemental pack from Citrix.…

When I first downloaded Windows 8 Developer Edition and Windows Server 8 Developer Edition, I haven't been able to boot the iso and install these new OS. I needed to install it on a physical machine, or vmware fusion and tyhen P2V to my XenServer 6 Beta Project Boston Then I found a very cool tip on Thomas Koetzing blog : You must create a VM with a Win7 template and copy the virtual machine UUID from the general tab in XenCenter or use xe vm-list in the CLI.  Next you need to run the command xe vm-param-set uuid=<VMUUID> platform:viridian=false Once you've done this modification, you'll be able to install Windows 8 all edition. And then if you want to install the Xentools, you can do it simply by mounting the xentools iso and right click the xensetup.exe file and chose properties. On the Compatibility tab, change the compatibility mode to Windows 7. Everything ran smoothly for me and Xentools works on my two Windows 8 vms
