Post Citrix Synergy / E2Evc Dublin 2016 20 Comments

May and June are very busy with conferences every years, this year was no exception. Attending this kind of event is very important for the kind of work we are doing. Knowing what's happening in the technology world and keeping touch with all the people willing to share their knowledge and experiences have always been very useful to gather 6 months of information in only few days. Citrix Synergy 2016 - Las Vegas First thing first, Citrix Synergy in Las vegas ! As a CTP, Synergy always have a special flavour because I get to know so many things from Citrix my brain is melting for 48hours and I need few days to digest everything :) This year Citrix made several announcement and beside the usual renaming and marketing bullshit, if I had one announcement to keep, that would be the Microsoft thing. Many people I met asked me about that, what do I think and what should we need to read between the line. My answer had been direct and surprise some of you :) I think Microsoft understand the value Citrix will add to accelerate the adoption of VDI (ie Windows 10 in Azure) The protocol, the acceleration the experience Citrix will bring is obvious. Are we tending toward a Windows 365 product ? The answer is as simple as a yes. A lot of Citrix Partner have been confused with this announcement, and we can easily understand why as Citrix is taking this part of business away from certain partner mouth. Of course it's not yet publicly said and it will maybe never be ;) Citrix need to make things clear for everyone and give customers and partners the big picture, one day or another. What I read between the line is Citrix and Microsoft announce they will be the only one to deliver Windows 10 in a DaaS mode and only in Azure, it is true indeed, they will be the only one but only for few months. Give some time to Vmware, Oracle or whatever company forced to deliver Windows 2012r2 desktop as a Service because of Microsoft licensing limitation, few anti-trust trial and Windows 365 Windows 10 will be available from everyone, everywhere. Another thing about the Microsoft Citrix thingy to understand is some of Citrix products overlap on Microsoft ones. As Citrix already got rid of many products, I think we will see in the…

This first big European event is over now, I wasn't able to attend all the session I wanted to go but mostly I'm satisfy by the information I gather and great people I met. There was no very big announcement, XenDesktop 5 has been unleashed since day 1 but one product have been put under the light by Citrix and this is a great tool for online meeting, the introduce a new feature, a product evolution, GoToMeeting HDFaces (up to 6 video stream during web conference) Citrix Synergy in Europe is a great way to meet new people, new customers and compare how business is going in the other countries. This is also the best way to have direct input from visionary guys Rick Dehlinger, Shawn Bass, Citrix CTOs etc... This is very important to see everything and understand the way everyone is perceiving evolution of IT and business next years. I gather all the information I can grab and digest it to do my own perception, I can then deliver my through and feeling to my customers. Next Synergy will be in San Francisco in May 2011 and in Barcelona in October 2011, I really hope to meet you there, this is always a pleasure to meet new people and exchange about our every day job at all levels.

Citrix Summit is over and Citrix Synergy is now taking over with all customers. Yesterday has been hell of day, lot of business, no time to go anywhere or attend any session. This morning was the kino and several announcement have been made : XenDesktop 5 XenServer 5.6 Feature Pack XenVault Receiver Dazzle like + new Ipad version Open Cloud Manage suite I will come back later on each point because some of these announcement are Citrix product major release. Now I need to fly to the next session : Part1 : Project "Virtual Reality Check" : best praticies for virtualising Terminal Services and desktop workloads - this is a Geak Speak Live session

The first day is over and the Citrix Partner event will end tonight. I didn't attend a lot of session since I saw many of those back in may in San Francisco, but session about XenServer tweaking streaming application troubleshooting were very interessting. I just grab some tips from there to try it out later and writte some blog about what I discover. This Summit / Synergy is different for me this year because many of my customer will be there and I definitly need to "hang-out" with them :) But I still met many very cool people from tweeter, other meetings and blogs, it's always a pleasure to share a drink with these guys. I already went to APP-DNA booth where I got a very cool demonstration about the product AppTitude http://app-dna.com/AppTitude/ . I think this tool can be very usefull in very large migration process and can help to gain a lot of time on such project. I will ask a demo version to try it with a set of application to bring you some more in depth information about this product. But if you're at Synergy go to their booth, ask for Ilan and tell you know me, you will have a very cool demo of this product :)

Citrix Summit is over, now this is Synergy with Citrix partners and customers.  There was twice and maybe more people in the same building, that was be huge. Sessions I attended this day were as follow. Schedule for Wednesday, May 12 6:30 am- 8:00 am Breakfast (Marriott/Hilton) Marriott/Hilton 7:00 am- 9:00 am Breakfast (Moscone West, 3rd Floor) Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone Level 3 8:00 am- 8:50 am SYN308 – From A to XenApp: the comprehensive technical guide to optimal XenApp farm design (2010 Edition) Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2007,2009,2020,2022 9:00 am- 9:50 am SYN321 – Supporting Macs and iPhones in your corporate infrastructure Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2001 10:30 am-12:30 pm Synergy Opening Keynote Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 3000-3012 12:30 pm- 3:30 pm Solutions Expo Hall Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone Level 1 12:30 pm- 2:30 pm Lunch Solutions Expo Hall 2:00 pm- 5:00 pm SYN422D – Practical HDX – optimizations for the real world San Francisco Marriott – Yerba Buena 1-2 I will be fast today, session are too average level, I think this is good session for XenApp, XenDesktop administrators on the way, there are many detailed architectures, a lot of debugging / troubleshooting tools explanations but that's it. There was nothing like deep memory dump analyzes, network packet capture and analyzes, it remains 'mainstream' for experimented Citrix engineers. So I used my time to understand how things are working at Synergy, V.I.P groups, clans and underground wars... I did have many theories about that but I keep it for myself :) Those guys are like rock stars in virtualization small planet, this is funny, it really remind me of what's happening behind the scene in music business. Some are true with themselves, committed, honest and frank while some others are really annoying (passi satana perkele) and some situation are just unreal. Cloud computing ? yeah right... Everyone needs to write something about this trendy rock'n roll attitude but they lost the point, users and CxOs are lost and if they're lost they won't pay for something they don't understand. Wait ! I need to check my crystal ball to write an blog about future of workstations and operating systems... Back to Synergy, there was the opening keynote from Mark Templeton about what's going on the crazy Citrix planet. There are many ongoing things for this year, and here…

The second day was for me about technical stuffs in the morning and more oriented sales in the afternoon. I wan to attend some technical event as TechEdge ones because we always learning, even a small details from the editor, and I needed to go to sales because I'm very often in the front line trying to sell vendor's solutions. So here is bellow my schedule for yesterday : Schedule for Tuesday, May 11 6:30 am- 7:30 am Breakfast (Marriott/Hilton) 7:00 am- 8:30 am Breakfast (Moscone West, 3rd Floor) 8:00 am- 8:50 am SUM301 – Debugging a Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop environment Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2003-2005 9:00 am- 9:50 am SUM302 – Troubleshooting XenDesktop deployments Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2003-2005 10:00 am-10:50 am SUM118 – Grow your NetScaler business by targeting new use cases Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2014 11:00 am-11:50 am SUM108 – Generate new revenue by upgrading Secure Gateway to Access Gateway VPX Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2001 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm Networking Meeting with xxxx, Serge RAJEVIC Level 2 Foyer, Table A1 1:30 pm- 2:20 pm SUM203 – The power of FlexCast delivery: any desktop to any user Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2004-2006 2:30 pm- 3:20 pm SUM103 – Drive desktop virtualization sales with a smart strategy Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2001 3:30 pm- 4:20 pm SUM214 – Build a site recovery demo from start to finish in one breakout session Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2007,2009,2020,2022 4:30 pm- 6:45 pm SYN501L – Geek Speak Tonight! Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2000-2002 7:00 pm-10:00 pm Synergy Welcome Reception Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone Level 1 TechEdge : Debugging Citrix XenDesktop & XenApp was interesting nothing new about XenApp, some useful information but that's it. Putting everyone who attended this session at the same level of understanding is nearly impossible, 25 first minutes are to explain a classic architecture and 25 to speak about debugging tools, not in deep. Some highlight for this session : Most common problem, VDA Registration, to debug : XDPing to check the time sync issues Check port connectivity (telnet XDPing, CtxPrtChk) Check RSOP for AD inconsistencies Check the event Viewver Capture remote CDF trace with CDF Control VDA connectivity problems Leverage XDPing (CTX123278) to rule out common causes Capture remote CDF Trace Check for display driver switching…

First day is over and I will report about session what I attended yesterday. My schedule was light compare to what I will attend today, the second day : 10:00 am-10:50 am SUM207 – The technology behind XenClient and the XenClient VM Synchronizer Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2008,2010,2012 11:00 am-11:50 am SUM206 – Management, simplified – with XenApp Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2004-2006 1:00 pm- 1:50 pm SUM201 – Migration from physical PCs to XenDesktop: a technical overview Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2004-2006 4:30 pm- 6:00 pm SUM502 – EMEA Partner Forum Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2008,2010,2012 The most important session for me was the first one about XenClient and the XenClient VM Synchronizer, I wrote a blog about that and I really can't wait to be able to download this "new toy". Then the second session of the day was about Citrix XenApp6 combine with Microsoft SCVMM. For all partner, at least in EMEA, this is something déjà vue, there are white papers and technical guides about that and I won't write too long about this subject (maybe a full blog about that) The third one was about the migration from physicals devices to XenDesktop. This was interesting to give the basics and know how don't blow a XenDesktop project by forgetting the basics of this kind of project. This was very simplified because there was only 50 minutes but the big steps were here. The opening keynote was ok, Mr Templeton thanks all the partners which make Citrix what they are today, there is a lot of money on the table to save all the people and buy us a green suite :) The Gartner point of view about desktop virtualization was very interesting, I took a lot of information from there. At the end of the day, the EMEA Partner forum was lead by Mr Scott R. Herren (Very nice to meet him and exchange a bit about french market) and remind everyone 2009 was a disaster until the last quarter and XenDesktop 4 saved Citrix from a lot of troubles. Very large XenDesktop deals (largest maybe) came out at the end of 2009. Then a welcome party in a museum, with a lot a funny things around, and I finally met Sir David McGeough from Citrix Readiness, It was a real please and I'm very glad to met…

Today is my last work day before I leave to United States, flying until San Francisco to attend Citrix Synergy 2010. Last year I got my tickets but I lost my passport and I wasn't able to fly until Las Vegas (...). This year, only Iceland's volcano will be able to stop me :) Synergy is important for me and the key point for me is Citrix XenClient. This is a revolution in the conception of what is a personal computer versus professional computer. I bet this market will explode within 3 years and I see huge business opportunities... I really look forward this event there is so many people to meet and the schedule promise to be very interesting. Many people I know already book me for different purpose, just meet and hand shake for good instead of sharing over the internet, meeting, work and interviews. Here is my schedule, if you come to one of these sessions, just come over to say me hello, I'm always glad to meet new people ! Schedule for Sunday, May 9 8:00 pm- 9:00 pm Networking Meeting with Alexander Juschin, Serge RAJEVIC to define Schedule for Monday, May 10 10:00 am-10:50 am SUM207 – The technology behind XenClient and the XenDesktop VM Synchronizer Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2008,2010,2012 11:00 am-11:50 am SUM206 – Management, simplified – with XenApp Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2004-2006 1:00 pm- 1:50 pm SUM201 – Migration from physical PCs to XenDesktop: a technical overview Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2004-2006 4:30 pm- 6:00 pm SUM502 – EMEA Partner Forum Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2008,2010,2012 Schedule for Tuesday, May 11 6:30 am- 7:30 am Breakfast (Marriott/Hilton) 7:00 am- 8:30 am Breakfast (Moscone West, 3rd Floor) 8:00 am- 8:50 am SUM301 – Debugging a Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop environment Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2003-2005 9:00 am- 9:50 am SUM302 – Troubleshooting XenDesktop deployments Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2003-2005 10:00 am-10:50 am SUM118 – Grow your NetScaler business by targeting new use cases Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2014 11:00 am-11:50 am SUM108 – Generate new revenue by upgrading Secure Gateway to Access Gateway VPX Moscone West Convention Center - Moscone 2001 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm Networking Meeting with Pierre MARMIGNON, Serge RAJEVIC Level 2 Foyer, Table A1 1:30 pm- 2:20 pm SUM203 – The power of FlexCast delivery: any desktop to…
