Every year I cross half of the planet to go over the United States in San Francisco to attend Citrix Synergy event. This is every time very exciting, meeting new people, friends, geeks and of course doing some business. This year was different as I didn’t had time to go to all the session I planned to attend due to an heavy but very pleasant schedule with CTPs. I had time to attend the keynotes and see what Citrix was ready to unleash for this major virtualization event, I will sum up everything that I think are the key points for the future of our job.

The main topic of keynote since two years ago is the Cloud, Personal, Private or Public, the Cloud is everywhere; look I even put an upper case when I write Cloud

GoTo products :

GoToAssist have reach 50M sessions, translated to 15 languages with a fastest time to service. GoToAssist for iPad and now for Android are available for free. You can download the Android app here : [here]

The mobile workstyle with GoToMeeting to work with anyone anywhere across any device gets HD faces available on iPad today.

Wyse :

After Wyse Xenith (zero client ) Wyse announced Xentih 2 [link] which is (supposed) to be 40% faster, more secure, true 720P with multi-monitor support.

Of course no one missed the fact Wyse has been acquired by Dell [link]

HP :

HP announce one of the coolest hardware during this Synergy, the HP t410 All-in-one, System on a chip, HDX ready and PoE (Power over Ethernet) consuming only 13watt, this is cool for a 18,5 inch screen. If you don’t use PoE, you can still use a regular power cord. This is not a revolution but an evolution, this zero client screen have a price, 429$

Specifications : [link]

Citrix VDI-in-a-Box

Now with a full HDX experience, and scale like lego block. What’s really new is you can upgrade from VDI-in-a-Box to XenDesktop licenses.

Citrix VDI-in-a-Box won the best of Interrop Award 2012 in cloud computing and virtualization category [link]

Dell DVS simplified powered by VDI-in-a-Box appear to be a good solution for SMB who need fast deployment [link]

AppDNA

AppDNA introduce new features / module like physical to virtual transition, Windows OS and browser upgrades with a new version released v6.1 [link]

Citrix XenClient, acquisition of Virtual Computer

Virtual Computer will bring to Citrix a powerful backend to manage XenClient computer and provide simple enterprise wide deployment , advanced policy and security control and automated backup and recovery.

This new product is due to be launch for 175$ per user in Q2 2012 and that will the chosen name is XenClient Enterprise Edition, the big news, this will be free for existing XenDesktop Enterprise customers.

Microsoft

Microsoft System center 2012 tight integration across Citrix portfolio, we could feel Citrix pushing to use Microsoft production to centralize the management of their product (Do they count on Microsoft to bring us the holy and only one console to manage most of the Citrix products ?) And of course Citrix did insist on the importance of XenDesktop with Windows 8.

Citrix acquire Podio

Podio is team collaboration with all the power of social networks, you can add workspaces for employees, customers and partners. In Podio there are already 100s of pre build workflow applications, you can also customize and build new application. Podio look like Microsoft Sharepoint with a Facebook look and feel. Of course since Citrix acquired Podio [link] there is an integration with Sharefile, GoToMeetings and soon Receiver Integration with HTML 5 client (use of Google chrome)

Citrix ShareFile with StorageZone

ShareFile Storage Zones allows customers to run the storage systems on-premise. This lets business users store and send files in-house on their own private cloud, or on Amazon S3, or on both, It’s for companies that want to host the files themselves.

Citrix Receiver

The new Citrix Receiver release is plan for July, Receiver Chromebook, Citrix Receiver with follow me data and Receiver with ShareFile integration.

Citrix Cloud Gateway 2

This new release add mobile and data controllers :

Including this two new controller will leverage file sharing and apps / mobility. This is the unified storefront for mobile, web saas and windows apps. A native HTML5 client should be included for iOS and Android.

Here are some features I wrote down during the keynote :

Set data access policies centrally

Single sign on for apps and data

Wipe apps and data remotly

Support 2B + PCs mac …..

For iOS :

Native app install through receiver for iOS !

Citrix XenDesktop

Citrix introduced a new Flexcast model = remote PC (what people were already doing, but this is a way to license it)

Deep compression codec HDX3D Pro

System Center Configuration Manager again

Windows 8 will be fully support

Citrix CloudBridge 2

Citrix CloudBridge 2 has been announced, it will allow to connect to even more remote Cloud, public and/or private, it will be available in June.

Citrix CloudStack

Citrix moved CloudStack to the Apache software foundation to make CloudStack more powerful, the new name of the product is Apache CloudStack. Now Citrix CloudStack is no more (it’s Apache CloudStack) a new Citrix product comes in and it’s Citrix CloudPlatform powered by Apache CloudStack… You followed ? It’s available today here : [link]

Citrix Netscaler

Netscaler 10 have been released few weeks ago with TriScale technology :

Scale Upelasticity with 5x faster performance on-demand with the simple NetScaler Pay-As-You-Grow software-based licensing model. This eliminates costly over provisioning, avoids regular ‘forklift’ appliance upgrades, and obviates the need to buy expensive chassis-based systems just to reserve empty slots in anticipation of future growth.

Scale Inconsolidation with the multi-function NetScaler SDX platform to simplify datacenter networks, eliminate appliance sprawl and streamline operational management by consolidating up to 40 independently managed devices into a single, easy-to-manage appliance. Unlike alternative solutions, the new NetScaler TriScale technology consolidates multiple appliances with no loss of functionality, and no performance compromises.

Scale Out to expand capacity up to 32x by seamlessly adding appliances to existing NetScaler deployments in a “plug-and-play” fashion with TriScale clustering, without the need to stand up redundant high-availability pairs. For the first time, datacenter managers can build a highly efficient infrastructure that meets current application demand, and then scale incrementally as traffic increases, with the capability to reach unprecedented performance levels exceeding 1 terabit/sec (Tbps).

It was very nice to speak and exchange with absolutly all of you. Once again I learned so many things my brain is still smoking from last week.

With my fellow friends and CTP Chris Rogers et Joseph Melika we made a short appearance on Citrix TV :

A soon coming blog will present you the Synergy focus point I did to try to make things clear a get the head of this event with the main and most important information.

My first server already setup is SUOMIWEB02 and I want to install Receiver Storefront on the server SUOMIWEB01 which actually host my WebInterface 5.4. Since Receiver Storefront 1.1 you can install it on the same server as the WebInterface (for migration purpose). You can find bellow a brief description about what’s new in the 1.1 version.

What’s New in Receiver Storefront 1.1

Pass-through authentication to AppController. Once logged on to Citrix Receiver or Access Gateway, users can access Web and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications through AppController without needing to authenticate again. For more information, see Planning Your Receiver Storefront Deployment.

Default support for legacy clients. When you create a new store, access for older clients that support Web Interface XenApp Services sites is enabled by default. For more information, see Configuring Stores.

Installation alongside Web Interface. Receiver Storefront can be hosted on the same Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) instance as Web Interface. For more information, see Installing and Setting Up Receiver Storefront.

Other Features

High availability. You can group your Receiver Storefront servers for increased scalability and fault tolerance. For more information, see Planning Your Receiver Storefront Deployment.

Application synchronization. Subscribed desktops and applications follow users from device to device so that they do not need to subscribe to the same resources each time they use a different device. For more information, see Planning Your Receiver Storefront Deployment.

Automatically provisioned applications. You can automatically subscribe all users to a core set of applications. For more information, see Integrating Receiver Storefront into Your Environment.

One-click client configuration. You can configure Citrix Receiver for your users by making provisioning files available. For more information, see Configuring Stores.

I won’t explain the installation process again, it’s very simple and you can still check it here if you need it : http://www.archy.net/2011/12/31/web-interface-moving-forward-to-receiver-strorefront/

Let’s focus on the server I want to add to my existing setup, 1 server hosting Storefront Receiver with an external SQL database.

This is the step by step how to you need to follow to do so :

On the new Receiver Strorefront (SUOMIWEB01) server :

On the existing Receiver Strorefront (SUOMIWEB02) server :

On the new Receiver Strorefront (SUOMIWEB01) server :

On the existing Receiver Strorefront (SUOMIWEB02) server

The two servers are now part of the same Receiver Storefront group, now you need to synchronize them, to do so, you need to follow the next step on the NEW Receiver Storefront server :

Now everything is ready. you need to think how to load balance them, Microsoft NLB or another load balancer appliance (NetScaler for example)

Of course I had some issue during this simple process because I used my “old” WebInterface 5.4 server to host the new Receiver Storefront server… The synchronization was failing…

and I had 3 error messages in the event log of the new server I was trying to add to the Receiver Storefront group :

If you read carefully, an existing webapplication was existing causing an issue, and when I checked my existing and the new server C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Citrix and I had the PNAgent directory on both side. So I just wen to disable the PNAgent legacy feature on the existing Receiver Storefront server and the synchronization went fine. If I need to enable the PNAgent legacy feature again, I will need to change the directory of the PNAgent service site on the “old” WebInterface 5.4. If you add a brand new server to an existing configuration you want have this issue.

I had to update a Windows 2003 – Citrix License Server at one customer place and I wasn’t ready for that… For the first time of my Citrix life I had to troubleshoot an upgrade process….

I have try to uninstall / install, update nothing allowed me to complete the installation of the Citrix License Server 11.10 on a Windows 2003 server… The installation was just stuck and never ended the installation process.

So I had to understand why this installation was stuck, in the event log I had this message :

“A provider, Citrix_GTLicensingProv, has been registered in the WMI namespace, Root\CitrixLicensing, to use the LocalSystem account. This account is privileged and the provider may cause a security violation if it doe not correctly impersonate user requests.”

Weird message and I’m not sure it’s related to the installation issue I have so I chose to use the good old msiexec command line to enable verbose logfile of the installation process :

The installer wasn’t able to process the creation of a service (sc.exe command) and I found this Microsoft Security Bulletin : MS09-012 The I downloaded the KB956572 and installed it on the License Server.

Then the installation went fine… I lost half of a day trying to understand what was wrong…

Now XenDesktop 5.6 is out, let go for a blog about what’s new and interesting in this release. It begins with official documentation, RTFM rules apply. Quick note, PvD technology is the integration of the RingCube technology bough by Citrix last year.

What’s New in XenDesktop 5.6

XenDesktop 5.6 includes the following new features and enhancements:

Personal vDisk – This feature is a personalization solution for virtual desktops. Two new types of catalog allow you to preserve the assignment of users to desktops even when the disk is cleaned at restart; the same user is assigned the same desktop for later sessions. The new catalogs are <dfn>pooled with personal vDisk</dfn> (for pooled-static virtual desktops) that you manage with Desktop Studio and <dfn>streamed with personal vDisk</dfn> that you manage with Provisioning Services. In addition, a dedicated storage disk is created, before logon, so users can store their data on the desktop, including any applications they install. For background information on this feature, see About Personal vDisks.New commands have also been added to the XenDesktop Software Development Kit (SDK) to support this feature.

System Center support – XenDesktop now supports Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager and Microsoft System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager.

Virtual Desktop Agent – A new version of the Virtual Desktop Agent fixes issues in the version included with XenDesktop 5.5.

Citrix Licensing – Citrix Licensing 11.10 lets you assign access to the License Administration Console using Active Directory Users and Groups.

Desktop Director – Desktop Director 2.1 supports personal vDisks and contains fixes since the last release. For more information, see the Desktop Director documentation.

Fixed issues – For information on the issues that have been fixed in this release, see CTX124164.

It looks great but how does Personal vDisk works ? I got it up and running very easily in my lab but now I would like to understand a bit more. I found a cool video on Citrix TV - XenDesktop 5.6 Personal vDisk feature overview :

How does PvD works ?

if you compare XenDesktop “classic” mode with PvD enable, you will notice very fast your virtual desktop model will change. You will move from assigned / pool desktops to a pooled desktop with PvD only model. Which means, one user will have one VM, the VM is assigned on first login.

PvD allows us to deliver a desktop where the Operating System / the Common Base Image / and the user’s Workspace will be separated to allow Operating System or Base Image maintenance without affecting the User Workspace (profile, user installed apps etc)

Architecture details :

What about Profile Management ?

PvD can be use as a simple profile management solution if your user are using only one desktop, in most of the case you won’t have to bring another piece of software to manage user profile. As PvD is moving on the P: drive user’s profiles and as the VM will always remain the same for every user, you might leave PvD acting as a simple user profile management solution.

If you chose to use Citrix Profile Management, it works as well, just as usual. You can combine profile management with PvD features. Citrix Profile Management will detect the presence of PvD and adjust its configuration automatically (UPM 4.1).

How does it look like ?

Here are some screenshots creating a new catalog Pooled with Personal vDisk (with MCS) in Desktop Studio 2.1:

I’ve always looked all the former CTPs thinking they were great and at the same time thinking I will maybe be among them one day. This is the result of hard work and a lot of shared knowledge. Everything became possible because my company (Activlan) is the greatest one to work in and allow me such freedom to do what I love in my work. Activlan always supported me in all the action and makes me travel all around the world to meet all of you and share information and knowledge.

Citrix gave me the opportunity to work several time with them at different level and I deeply appreciate that as well, Education, Consulting, Speaking engagement, I’m very proud to have this bond between our two companies and the trust which is going on.

Thanks to Laura Whalen, Serge Rajevic and all people who always push me to go forward in life.

I updated last week my lab at home :

XenServer 6.0 to XenServer 6.0.2

Provisioning Services 6.0 to Provisioning Services 6.1

and XenDesktop 5.5 to XenDesktop 5.6

Everything went well for XenDesktop, update was smooth and VDA update was successful and simple as well. I did the setup of Personal vDisk successfully and it worked without doing anything specific. Then I wanted to built a new Windows 7 golden image to take a fresh start and install the less application possible, this is when I began to have an issue with Personal vDisk :

Startup failed

Personal vDisk failed to start because the snapshot inventory has not been updated. Update the inventory then try again.

Status code: 15

Error code: 0×0

Alright, I had a freshWindows 7 VM updated to the last Microsoft patches with Acrobat Reader installed, PVS Target Device, Citrix Profile Management, EdgeSight and XenTools… Every time I was creating a new vDisk using Imaging Wizard, the operation was successful but all the VMs I tried to launch after had this issue… I got the log files to try to understand what was wrong by clicking on the collect logs button : I got a zip file containing PvDSvc.log.txt, PvDWMI.log.txt and SysVol-lvmSupervisor.log, I will just past an excerpt here :

Clearly with the SysVol-lvmSupervisor.log file, something was wrong… It took me some time to figure out what could be wrong. I just noticed every time I wanted to use Imaging Wizard, when the VM needed to reboot to load the vDisk and boot, before restarting the Personal vDisk inventory manager was launch and requested to be updated… So I did the update but at every reboot the same pop-up came again and again…

I went to read the “manual” :

To update master images that use personal vDisks

You enable the personal vDisk feature for use with a master image when you install the Virtual Desktop Agent. During the installation procedure and after any update to the image after installation, it is important that the disk’s inventory is refreshed and a new snapshot is created. This procedure describes the required steps.

Because administrators, not users, manage master images, if you install an application that places binary files in the administrator’s user profile, the application is not available to users of shared virtual desktops (including those based on pooled catalogs and pooled with personal vDisk catalogs). Users must install such applications themselves.

It is best practice to take a snapshot of the image after each step in this procedure.

Update the master image by installing any applications or operating system updates, and performing any system configuration on the machine. For master images based on Windows XP that you plan to deploy with personal vDisks, check that no dialog boxes are open (for example, messages confirming software installations or prompts to use unsigned drivers). Open dialog boxes on master images in this environment prevent the Virtual Desktop Agent from registering with the controller. You can prevent prompts for unsigned drivers using the Control Panel. For example, on Windows XP click System > Hardware > Driver Signing, and select the option to ignore warnings.

Shut down the machine. For Windows 7 machines, click Cancel when Citrix personal vDisk blocks the shutdown.

In the Citrix personal vDisk dialog box, click Update Inventory. This step may take several minutes to complete.

Important: If you interrupt the following shutdown (even to make a minor update to the image), the personal vDisk’s inventory no longer matches the master image. This causes the personal vDisk feature to stop working. If you interrupt the shutdown, you must restart the machine, shut it down, and when prompted click Update Inventory again.

When the inventory operation shuts down the machine, take a snapshot of the master image.

In fact what I didn’t read on the Citrix eDoc are the step to create the golden image and how to use Personal vDisk Inventory Update tool :

Build you Microsoft Windows golden image.

Install apps and everything you need.

Use Imaging Wizard to export your VMs on a vDisk to a PVS store.

(This is what I didn’t read in the manual) Switch the boot of the VM you used (in PVS) to boot from vDisk instead of Hard Drive (Keep the vDisk in private mode)

Boot the VM and then run the Personal vDisk Inventory Update (just Shutdown the VM and click Cancel when Citrix personal vDisk blocks the shutdown.

Shutdown the VM.

Change the vDisk mode to standard and create new VMs through the XenDesktop Wizard as follow :

And boot up you new VMs, everything should work like a charm with Personal vDisk enable

To sum up this blog, you need to boot your vDisk at least one time in private mode to run the Personal vDisk Inventory Update before changing the vDisk mode to standard and boot all your VMs.

My XenServer lab has been updated / upgraded, XenDesktop is now 5.6, XenServer 6.0.2 and Provisioning Services is 6.1 now. I had one issue with this last one, I wasn’t able to create a new golden image for my brand new XenDesktop 5.6 setup…

I was able to create the new VHD through the PVS Wizard but once the VM rebooted the connection to the VHD wasn’t initialized… I knew it was a network issue but I had to remember a very old issue I had with PVS 4 or early 5…

First you need to uninstall XenTools and the PVS Target Device agent. Reboot and install XenTools.

After you have installed the XenTools and rebooted your Windows VM you need to do the following:

Type in a command prompt

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

Then type Start DEVMGMT.MSC, click in the View menu, and then chose Show Hidden Devices. Expand the Network Adapters tree and right-click the dimmed network adapter, to uninstall it

I know PHD Virtual systems company and what they do but I never had a chance and time to check out their stuff.

In an upcoming blog I will try their Citrix XenDesktop monitoring solution and check what this product can bring to a XenDesktop infrastructure.

For this backup software I won’t be able to go very deep and test everything I would like because my lab is not that big and I don’t have access right now to a biggest environment but as soon as it’s possible I will deep dive into this backup solution. Few month ago I wrote a blog about backing up your VMs using OpenFiler and I will do the same kind of blog to check if using PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer is a good solution if you have XenServer platinum licenses or if you don’t.

FIrst let’s check what you got with different XenServer editions :

You can click on the image to make it bigger (in fact you can click on any pic on www.archy.net to make it bigger ) and as you can see, the “Automated VM protection and recovery” is now available from the Enterprise edition (needed to be platinum with XenServer 5.6) And Citrix mention that bellow this edition frame : [1] Automated VM protection and recovery is only available for the Advanced and Enterprise editions in the 6.0 release and later.

You can check the XenServer edition page at Citrix website here : link

What is Automated VM Protection and Recovery ?

Utilizing an easy set-up wizard, administrators can create snapshot and archival policies. Regularly scheduled snapshots help to protect against data loss in case of a VM failure. The policies established are based on snapshot type, frequency, amount of historical data that is retained, and an archive location. Recovering a VM is completed by simply choosing the last good known archive.

This is very easy to use and does it’s job integrated in XenCenter administration console. I use this feature to backup all my VMs on my lab but I must admit this is a very basic solution for a basic need and it takes a lot of time.

XenServer’s VM Protection and Recovery (VMPR) feature provides a simple backup and restore utility for your critical service VMs. Regular scheduled snapshots are taken automatically and can be used to restore VMs in case of disaster. Scheduled snapshots can also be automatically archived to a remote CIFS or NFS share, providing an additional level of security.

VM Protection and Recovery works by having pool-wide VM protection policies that define snapshot schedules for selected VMs in the pool. When a policy is enabled, snapshots are taken of the specified VMs at the scheduled time each hour, day or week, and, if configured, the snapshots can also be archived automatically. Several policies may be enabled in a pool, covering different VMs and with different schedules.

Of course there is no compression, every time this is a full snapshot which is copied but the option exist and it can be very helpful.

Now the core of this blog to “compete” with the built-in feature included in XenServer, PHD Virtual Backup for XenServer.

How does it work ?

I won’t invent anything, everything is well explain in their User guide : link I will just extract the essential :

When a backup is run, the PHD VBA (PHD Virtual Backup Appliance) first reads the target VM metadata and creates a snapshot.

Next, the virtual disks created with the snapshot are attached to the PHD VBA as new virtual disks and the snapshot is removed.

The data is then deduplicated, verified, and compressed and sent to the defined backup storage location.

Finally, the virtual disks are detached from the PHD VBA and removed.

The PHD VBA is cool I mean I don’t know anything in backup software, I left it behind a long time ago with ArcServe 6.5 with tape DAT / LTO etc… Now today we have customer that want to virtualize everything but almost every time think at the end (often too late) that they might need a backup solution for their virtual environment because all their virtual stuff sits on physical servers and fire can still burn everything to the ground ! And water can still be very wet !

Let’s go through the installation of PHD Virtual Backup for XenServer.

Every time I write or say “Let’s go” Dora the Explorer picture popup in my mind because my daughter like her a lot

PHD Virtual give in the file you can download from their website a XenServer appliance. Which means there is zero installation to do. Just import the PHD Virtual Backup appliance to your XenServer host and start it. I really like it, this is simple, it’s up an running in less than 1 minute, it needs to be setup still but you don’t have to worry about database or some other prerequisite to have your backup solution online.

The XenServer Virtual Appliance (xva) file size to import is 1.66GB, it takes 1 vCpu and 1Gb of memory.

Once this appliance is started, you just need to configure it and again, my geek (dark) side always take over and make me do things and clicking everywhere before reading the F manual (RTFM philosophy) but everything went well because that was very simple to set everything up. My ArcServe nightmares faded away instantly !

The PHD VBA is running and if you open your XenCenter to check the console you’ll see that :

There is red, I don’t like it but it means it’s not configure yet. So I checked the IP address of the new appliance and went to browse with my favorite internet browser on the PHD VBA IP address on the 443 port (https). You can download and install the “client” to connect this appliance and begin the setup.

I did a small test to compare backup time for 220Gb of VM to my Nas and compare time XenServer with the build in feature VMPR took and compare it with PHDVirtual Backup for XenServer.

The result is obvious, VMPR XS feature take a snapshot and copy the full snapshot to the NAS and XS is doing it everytime, PHD Virtual Backup for XenServer is compressing and sending small data block to the NAS and just backing up the differential for the 2nd backup. Only the first complete backup took long time, then the backup time is divided per 3. Those are lab at home result but it show the difference between a build-in feature and a real backup solution, you can easily imagine the impact long and full backup can have in a production environment.

I think this is a good backup solution for SMB and Large company, very easy to setup and maintain, you don’t need to be ArcServe all version certified to understand how this software works and performance are ahead of the one deliver by the build in feature of XenServer. For the large company I still need to read about high availability etc but I won’t blog about it since it’s a bit out of my vPlayground.

If you don’t have time to test PHD Virtual Backup for XenServer, I hope this blog gave you a good insight and encourages you to check further about this solution.
