Category : ArchY.net Site, Citrix, Presentation Server 4, Presentation Server 4.5, Windows 2008 R2, XenApp 5, XenApp 6

There are many post around to tune Citrix XenApp in many ways and there are even more to tune Microsoft Windows 2008 R2.

I want to begin a new document as we had with Citrix Metaframe 1.8 tuning tips on Microsoft Windows NT4 TSE. This was a great document and very helpfull in many way.

If you have any ideas, agree on what I will write or disagree, I take everything to form a big document available online for everyone.

First I would like to know if we should create a wiki-like to let everyone working on the document and add/change at will, what do you think ?

Which is the best way to realize Citrix XenApp tuning tips

  • A wiki where everyone can add/change (69%, 9 Votes)
  • A thread on the forum (31%, 4 Votes)
  • By email (0%, 0 Votes)

XenApp 4.5 / 5 unattended installation

Category : Citrix, Microsoft, Presentation Server 4.5, Windows 2003, Windows 2008, XenApp 5

Unattended installation is very usefull in large XenApp farm, of course if you’re deploying one server per two month you might not be interessed by this process automation but this is always interresting to know this kind of tips. Scripts bellow are example I use every day in production to install servers, of course its needs to be change and adapt to your own settings and of course if you have some ideas to share, I take it !

This unattended example assume you have only one network card enable, a local XenApp source installation file and IP address type 192.168.3 / 192.168.10 / 192.168.200 / 10.113 / 10.112. This file allow to join an existing farm named CTX_TEST with a datastore hosted on a SQL server. Finally, you need to create one folder per farm inside your XenApp source folder if you are automating multi farm setup.

Citrix XenServer 5.5 Update 2

Category : Citrix, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, XenServer 5.5

Update 2 is already here and is double size vompare to the first one, here is some more informations :

This update resolves the network connectivity issues that affected customers with both IPv4 and IPv6 network interfaces enabled who installed Update 1. This issue is described in XenServer 5.5 Update 1 Upgrade Causes Virtual Machines to Lose Network Connectivity.

Additional Changes in Update 2
Addressed an issue where the system was falsely reporting lost access to the HA metadata disk.
Fixed issues upgrading from XenServer 5.0 to the roll-up ISO for XenServer 5.5.
In addition, the XenServer 5.5 documentation was rereleased to coincide with Update 2. While the changes in the documentation are not significant, there are some differences between XenServer 5.5 and XenServer 5.5, Update 2.

You can download it here : http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX124027

You can download the updated ISO files here : http://downloadns.citrix.com.edgesuite.net/4701/XenServer-5.5.0-Update2-install-cd.iso

How to debug Java website publish application

Category : Presentation Server 4, Presentation Server 4.5, Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows XP, XenApp 5, XenApp 6

These last days I had to find out what was wrong with an extranet publish through XenApp. This extranet is using java and the issue users reported was random disconnection with a java popup. Find out what is wrong with extranet application is very hard because this is just a published browser with an URL pointing to a website in another company, everything works well until one day… My goal was to bring as much information and details as possible to the extranet’s support team and I needed to use the java console and grab the most verbose log possible.

First you need to publish the Java Control Panel,

Citrix XenServer 5.5 Update 1

Category : Citrix, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, XenServer 5.5

Citrix release today the first update for XenServer 5.5 :

Changes included in this update
LVHD Snapshots
When LVHD snapshots are deleted, disk space is reclaimed by freeing unused snapshot data. This is provided automatically by XenServer while VMs continue to run. However, there is a known limitation in the 5.5 implementation of this feature: when all snapshots are deleted for a given VM?s disks, some disk space allocated to these snapshots may remain. To address this limitation, Update 1 includes an ‘Off-line Coalesce’ tool that can reclaim all disk space previously allocated to deleted snapshots while the VM is temporarily set offline. The Off-line Coalesce tool and its use are described in full in an associated KB article: CTX123400.

XenCenter Improvements
CA-30569, CA-32164, CA-30200

Fixed various ‘Application Errors’ in XenCenter.

CA-32241

XenCenter saved searches are now visible under ‘Apply Saved search’ and ‘Delete saved search’ options.

CA-33918

Big improvements to XenCenter performance when connecting to multiple pools.

Storage
CA-30577

Snapshot errors after upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5. Previously released as hotfix XS55E001 and documented in KB article CTX122142.

CA-24607

When multipathing is disabled, then this information is now correctly displayed in XenCenter.

Here it is ! We were waiting for this one since few month now and Citrix just release the Technical Preview for XenApp on Microsoft Windows 2008 R2, XenApp 6.

First, few screenshots of the new installation interface to describe the installation process.

New Citrix Receiver 1.1.21803.0

Category : Citrix, Receiver, Windows 7, XenApp Plugin

Citrix released earlier this week a new Citrix Receiver version (1.1) and this one look like finished.  You can check bellow screenshots of this new UI

Screen shot 2009-11-01 at 02.10.00 Screen shot 2009-11-01 at 02.11.13

There is some missing point to this tool, most of company made the choice to deploy the PNAgent and by experience many users are now use to launch their XenApp application through the start menu but also right clicking the PNAgent icon on the task bar. This is not possible any more, I really think this feature should be back to allow a massive deployment.
