Citrix XenDesktop 7 – Installation 14 Comments

XenDesktop 7 is now available with different features and entitlements (link) and yes there is a lot to read on this webpage but most of everything is already known features. So I will just write now what I read between the line : No more Citrix Streaming Application (RIP) in favor of Microsoft APP-V XenServer is now version 6.2 and Open Source ! http://www.xenserver.org/ Seamless Local Apps is now official and build-in. PVS is version 7 now and MCS continue its evolution. (I'll come back later on a blog post about that) Edgesight is included in XenDesktop 7 (Another blog post subject) Storefront is now version 2 Receiver for Windows is v4 Windows 8 and Windows 2012 supported Many other changes I need to cover later on Several editions are available today : Now this is time to show you how the installation process, pretty straight forward as I already mention and this is for those who are curious about this new version and don't have tie to POC it or try it right away.   To download Citrix XenDesktop 7, this is the way -> [link] XenDesktop 7 Edocs : [link] XenDesktop 7 Admin Guide : [link] XenDesktop 7 Upgrade Guide : [link] XenDesktop 7 Install Guide : [link]

Citrix Excalibur Tech Preview 6 Comments

As many of you might know Citrix are kind of melting all there product in one, a Cloud product. The project name is Avalon, with two releases until next year named Excalibur (what we will speak about in this blog post) and Merlin coming later next year. First, I spoke with many customers and other partner, and Citrix one more time did confuse everyone with all those names... Avalon, Excalibur, Merlin, Thor etc etc Almost 90% of the people I spoke with though Avalon, Excalibur and Merlin are three different products. Maybe I'm wrong but as far s I can see thing, Avalon is the code name for the final project then Excalibur and Merlin are just timeline version release until the final release and then a final product name. I must admit this one is a bit confusing everyone... This is like Citrix wants to show the big picture but just give a tiny pieces of the puzzle. Citrix Avalon Excalibur Tech Preview is available for download here : [link] Project Avalon Excalibur Technology Preview is our next-generation, unified desktop and app virtualization technology that is reinventing the delivery of Windows apps and desktops for mobility in the cloud-era.  The availability of this tech preview will allow Citrix customers and partners to have a first-hand look at a new unified FlexCast infrastructure combining VDI and Hosted Shared desktops and apps from a single platform. Part 1/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Personal Cloud 1/3 Part 2/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Private Cloud 2/3 Part 3/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Public Cloud 3/3 Public Cloud The last cloud of 3 (Personal Cloud, Private Cloud and Public Cloud) has been announced to be used in a very easy way, the same way as the creation of a GMail or a Hotmail email account. The way to make this easy connection available is Citrix CloudBridge, this product allow you to connect your datacenter to any cloud with full transparency, security and performance. Citrix CloudBridge will run on network layer 2 and 3 to provide fast and secure IP transaction. The beta version will arrive soon, no more information for now. And then another new product (maybe more like a new NetScaler feature) Citrix NetScaler CloudConnectors will secure the connection all the way down to the client devices has been announced but no release date yet. About what we need to build a cloud, Mark Templeton underline we will soon need to all being ready to build, connect Cloud Infrastructures and Cloud Providers. Most of the enterprise are doing server virtualization ++ built for traditional enterprise apps & client-server compute including a traditional management, then enterprises will need to move on cloud platforms designed around big data, massive scale & next-gen cloud apps with an autonomic management and an open, value added stack. This is where Citrix CloudPortal will enter the game, a layer on to of CloudStack. Citrix vision for the future is 3 clouds, Personal Cloud to empower people, Private Cloud to aggregate and deliver apps and data, Public Cloud to build and connect infrastructures. The 3 PCs. Citrix clearly claims to be the number one partner you need to think when you want to cloudify you network, application, data and devices. And want to lead the new IT to impact the business needs. This is it, I had to live my Synergy remotely from Paris, and this are all the information I could get from Synergy Live and Twitter. Next step will be to digest, analyze and put everything together. I think we have enough new material to play until next Synergy. VDI Project – Not only a XenDesktop project (part.1) VDI Project - The framework (part.2) VDI Project - Hypervisor war (part.3) VDI Project - Desktops and applications delivery (part.4) VDI Project - User Environment Manager (part.5) Beginning a new project is every time a new challenge, new team, new processes and new environment. Each customer have its own past IT history and,  depend of the size, different IT, politics and complexity. This time I'm a desktop architect and I've been hired mostly for my Citrix skills. The challenge is the size of this new project, I will design for sure some Citrix architectures, XenDesktop, XenApp, PVS, maybe Access Gateway or Netscaler on a very large scale but I'm also responsible to design a complete workstation delivery service (automation / industrialization) and address all kind of endpoints, from the "classic" workstation to the well known iPad. This is my largest XenDesktop 5 project, I will use XenDesktop to bring flexibility and mobility to users. I will write some blogs along the project because I think this will be a great experience to share, technical and not technical. I can't wait to post some very technical stuff about IOPS with Citrix Provisioning Services, XenDesktop and Machine Creation Service related with storage. I will post every major subject for ex : The Software Framework, The Hypervisor War (these two blogs are almost finished) etc etc... I also want to share the non technical subjects because this is how a project live... Changing the way people are working in a company can be very painful, first you need to bring the idea of a change in their everyday life and then prove them they will have more time to work on more important project. Then you show they can save some money within 3 or 5 years. I can tell you this is the big part of a project and the less fun (for me) but this is a mandatory part of every project : Show the company board and managers how much they can save and explain to the IT staff they will be able to spend more time on larger scale issue and project, work more efficiently. This is a lot of work, first administrative / politics, then technical (POC) and very technical (Global Architecture) And I always I will learn so many thing, and I'm sure it will be a great…

Citrix Summit is over, now Citrix Synergy takes place, I attended several very interesting sessions : Spotlight on the desktop virtualization startups (GSL!) with Simon Bramfitt Virtual Reality Check phase IV: best practices for virtualizing Terminal Server and desktop workloads (GSL!) with Ruben Spruijt and Jeroen van de Kamp Getting from "Wow to How", Part 1&2: Designing an architecture for desktop transformation that can adapt and scale with Daniel Feller, Florian Becker and Douglas Demskis. Terminal Server vs. VDI: 2011 edition (GSL!) with Brian Madden and of course the Keynote with many cloud-ouncement delivered by Mark T, many announcement, mostly around network products line I made a list of the essential point shown today : Kaviza is now a part of Citrix The partnership with Microsoft is stronger, with the full integration with App-V and System Center VMM, with HDX supporting remote FXand with Hyper-V SP1 supporting 40% more VMs. In Microsoft System Center, a new XenApp connector, updated management packs, SCOM : Monitor and manage XenApp, XenDesktop & NetScaler. XenServer management by managing both Hyper-V and XenServer VMs in a single console. And the v-alliance (Microsoft and Citrix) GoToMeeting HD Faces : Multistream HD 1920x960, 6 ways video and the public beta is available today HERE XenClient 2 is official now, is available today as well, Express Edition / Tech Preview and you can grab it HERE, XenClient 2 is : 3x expanded hardware compatibility, Expanded graphic support, Production scale Synchronizer, simplified user experience XenClient XT has been announce as well, this version is build to support, Extreme security / Extreme isolation / Extreme performance A new Receiver for iPad with the following specs : Simpler self-service user experience, Fast app switching (that's totally cool), Higher resolution desktop (1600x1200), Improved bluetooth keyboard support, Store configuration auto-discovery, faster graphics & 40% less bandwidth, Accelerated video performance, Double pass encryption of passwords, Jailbreak detection (WTF?) A new Receiver for the web, for all the web browsers. There is also a new Receiver for Windows Tech Preview available HERE GoToManage for iPad to support physical & virtual desktops from anywhere, Remotely manage networks and servers, Free for individual IT pros, easy upgrade path for expanded usages & features available soon... NetScaler Cloud Gateway to aggregate, orchestrate, deliver all Saas, web and Windows apps The Follow-me data across devices is a kind of Citrix DropBox attached to the receiver, the idea is to…

This is the idea I have from time to time, and maybe Citrix are already on it, but I wanted to share this because you might want to add your own ideas to the list. Synergy in San Francisco is very soon, it might be the right time to come to some of the product managers and exchange about some of these items. XenCenter Console for iPad (and iPhone ?) XenCenter Console for Mac OSx XenServer statistics in EdgeSight Background customization back in the Citrix Receiver for iPad Free move and placement of shortcuts back in the Citrix Receiver for iPad Capacity and Power Management for vSphere and Hyper-V Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 support for EdgeSight XenClient support for MacBook hardware XenDesktop Offline Desktop in XenClient That's it for today, but I'm sure I will have some more idea very soon... I'll update this blog then.

Citrix Summit is over, now this is Synergy with Citrix partners and customers.  There was twice and maybe more people in the same building, that was be huge. Sessions I attended this day were as follow. Schedule for Wednesday, May 12 6:30 am- 8:00 am Breakfast (Marriott/Hilton) Marriott/Hilton 7:00 am- 9:00 am Breakfast (Moscone West, 3rd Floor) Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone Level 3 8:00 am- 8:50 am SYN308 – From A to XenApp: the comprehensive technical guide to optimal XenApp farm design (2010 Edition) Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2007,2009,2020,2022 9:00 am- 9:50 am SYN321 – Supporting Macs and iPhones in your corporate infrastructure Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 2001 10:30 am-12:30 pm Synergy Opening Keynote Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone 3000-3012 12:30 pm- 3:30 pm Solutions Expo Hall Moscone West Convention Center – Moscone Level 1 12:30 pm- 2:30 pm Lunch Solutions Expo Hall 2:00 pm- 5:00 pm SYN422D – Practical HDX – optimizations for the real world San Francisco Marriott – Yerba Buena 1-2 I will be fast today, session are too average level, I think this is good session for XenApp, XenDesktop administrators on the way, there are many detailed architectures, a lot of debugging / troubleshooting tools explanations but that's it. There was nothing like deep memory dump analyzes, network packet capture and analyzes, it remains 'mainstream' for experimented Citrix engineers. So I used my time to understand how things are working at Synergy, V.I.P groups, clans and underground wars... I did have many theories about that but I keep it for myself :) Those guys are like rock stars in virtualization small planet, this is funny, it really remind me of what's happening behind the scene in music business. Some are true with themselves, committed, honest and frank while some others are really annoying (passi satana perkele) and some situation are just unreal. Cloud computing ? yeah right... Everyone needs to write something about this trendy rock'n roll attitude but they lost the point, users and CxOs are lost and if they're lost they won't pay for something they don't understand. Wait ! I need to check my crystal ball to write an blog about future of workstations and operating systems... Back to Synergy, there was the opening keynote from Mark Templeton about what's going on the crazy Citrix planet. There are many ongoing things for this year, and here…

Citrix announce one fact : 72% of devices will be laptop. Citrix XenClient is a type 1 hypervisor (bare metal) and can run in stand alone mode without the back end Citrix XenClient Synchronizer. This is build on the 64 bit open source technology used with XenServer and you can run multiple virtual desktops simultaneously. Different VMs are completely secure isolation from each other and are hardware independent VM. A named call Service VM Architecture has been develop for extensibility. XenClient provide a good end user interaction and advanced security for your devices and you data. With centralized security policies you can for example allow one user to run a VM for 4 days in a offline mode and if the suer doesn't connect on internet the VM will be shutdown until the user is able to connect and authenticate to request more time. The XenClient SDK should be available in 2011 The Citrix Receiver for Xenclient is the first Service VM for XenClient. Using Citrix Receiver for XenClient provide a very simple user interface to access, create and configure VM locally. You can very easily switch between local VMs. Synchronizer for XenClient is the backend to manage XenClient and manages centralized delivery of VMs. It also provide a full time backup & rapid recovery with a smart backup delta data. You can remote kill VMs and manage local policy controls with Citrix Synchronizer for XenClient. A bit of architecture : XenClient is based on a very thin piece of code taken and shared with XenServer. This is a linux control Domain and you will use paravirtualized drivers as well as being able to allow direct access to hardware for a specific VM. The XenClient user interface is Receiver for XenClient. Flexible Virtualization Architecture, as mention above, disks, networks devices, USB and graphics devices are virtualized and ensure VM portability. You have also a selective passthrough, 3D Graphic Direct, Intel AMR Direct : Mix and match : You can give Direct access to GPU to a specific VM, same for storage and network separately (?) to confirm. Synchronizer for XenClient Architecture : Synchronizer will be provide as a XenServer image and will be up and running within 10 minutes (Merchandising Server like cli wizard). The admin interface is web based (https) and authentication can remain local or being linked with an Active Directory. VM delivery and administration are using a…
