Citrix CloudGateway 2.5 – MDX 5 Comments

What about MDX ? I think this is smart move from Citrix who push toward managing Apps and native Apps deployed to the mobile devices instead of trying to fully manage the device itself. Now this technology is not mature yet and needs some time and improvement and each version is a giant step forward. I'm really looking forward what's coming and soon be announced by Citrix. Overview Full support for both personal and corporate usage (BYOD) Corporate apps and data secure even on employee-owned devices New consumer-driven devices supported immediately No risk of corporate data loss or compliance exceptions when: Device is lost or stolen or employee leaves organization Collaboration / file sharing apps used on the device Governance is built-in Policies can be updated on hundreds of apps with no requirement to change source code No requirement for developers to change the way they develop apps or learn mobile security standards What is the meaning of MDX ? Mobile Device eXperience. There are 3 key MDX technologies :   Application wrapping tool Mobile App Wrap tool runs on Mac OS X Mobile App Wrap tool for Android Beta Available Takes a pre-compiled iOS native application bundle (.IPA) as input Produces repackaged iOS application bundle with Citrix app wrapper logic inserted (.MDX) Recertifies the repacked app with using a customer provided enterprise distribution profile TIP : Where are stored IPA files on your MAC OS ? Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion: ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Mobile Applications/ Mac OS X 10.6: ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ Windows 7: C:\Users\Username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications\ App Preparation Tool for iOS Applications (iOS only) installation The application can be launch from the Applications within the Citrix folder Using Citrix App Preparation Tool :   And then the application is asking for an iOS Distribution Provisioning Profile and iOS Distribution Certificate If you're like me and wondering how to get this two things, here you are : iOS Distribution Provisioning Profile [link] and [link] iOS Distribution Certificate [link] This is where it hurts... to get the iOS Distribution Provisioning Profile a subscription to the iOS Developer Program is required and this is about 99$ per year. Then the deployment can be done with the AppController   and voilà ! Since there are still a lot of NDA topics about this subject and since I won't pay 99$ to Apple to write a bit more about that, that's it for now but it gives a…

This year wasn't as surprising as it has been in the past years on the innovation and "really new stuff". Perhaps this is is because since I'm a CTP I know a lot more on Citrix plan before the announce it but I think the evolution Citrix brings into their product now will still take a year to go and be released and ready to go. Some announces are old already, many things have been announced at Citrix Synergy in San Francisco and many announces made were about products already available since couple of months. Anyway, here is my wrap up so far : ByteMobile is now part of Citrix, acquisition in july (Official Announcement here) over 6 billion mobile devices growing 50%+ mobile data is video & multimedia growth - 25x over the next 5 years This acquisition brings Citrix cloud networking convergence with mobile data a bit further. XenServer The general availability of the 6.1 released has been made one month ago (Official Announcement here) and the major features are : live storage migration batch conversion of vmware vms Citrix Cloudplatform integration XenClient XenClient Enterprise 4.5 is available now for ultrabook and after Citrix other acquisition this year (Virtual Computer) advanced set of features are coming along with this new realease : Broader hardware compatibility XenClient Enterprise is now localized VLAN tagging support External network access to Synchronizer via Citrix NetScaler SSL bridging SSL offload Windows 8 guest OS Native Windows experience A new display architecture Dual external monitors in a docking station 30% improvement in hypervisor boot time VM export support A Citrix community blog post detail every new feature released here : [click] Partnership with Microsoft is going the same weird way as it has always been :) Some numbers and information have been given during the keynote : 80% growth XenDesktop on Hyper-v Windows server 2012 with Hyper-v Improved vm density with hyper-v Windows 8 support native UI design & platform support + GoToMeeting GoToMypc ShareFile and AppDNA are supporting the new Microsoft Operating System as well Citrix Receiver for Windows 8 early release on Windows Store Here is some screenshot :   GoToMeeting HD faces now on iPad With this new release it's now possible to present with an iPad. Citrix released few days ago the first public technical preview for Citrix ShareFile part of the Follow me Data strategy announced by Citrix CEO during last Synergy in Barcelona. You can download Windows, Mac, Android and iOS clients and register here : link Citrix acquired ShareFile last year in October 2011 (link) less than six months later we have a Technical Preview to check out. What is Citrix ShareFile ? This is an "add-on / plugin" for Citrix Receiver (iOS, Mac, Windows, Android) and it allows you to access, share centralized data and request files from all your devices. This is a "Dropbox like" but design to be enterprise ready. Citrix likes to compare ShareFile to Apple iCloud but it's not so "iCloud" because you can control what you want to share, you can easily chose what needs to be "synchronized" across all your devices. With iCloud, I know all my music is in iMatch but I would have like to keep private some of it on my computer, now everything is somewhere in the Apple iCloud... Make common data services like search, share, sync, secure, authenticate, open and preview available to a wide range of applications, services and use cases through a set of open APIs. Extend secure data sharing services to new and existing apps stored in public and private clouds and accessed from millions of different business and consumer devices. Connect data seamlessly to the way people collaborate today, ensuring that the right documents and files are always accessible when needed, and always up to date. Where my data, personal and professional are stored ? With this Technical Preview, all your files are stored "in the Cloud" within the Citrix ShareFile infrastructure. I remember what I saw last October (2011) at Synergy in Barcelona we should be able to store data in our own datacenter. I don't know any detail yet but this is the feature that will kill DropBox (for the companies that use it) Local : Yes, the data is store on you devices, Windows and Mac in a dedicated folder but not for the iOS and Android devices which you need to download every time you want to look at a ShareFile document. Datacenter : Not yet (in the Tech. Prev.) Cloud : Yes, everything is already stored within the Citrix ShareFile infrastructure I also remember this slide i saw during Mark T (Citrix…

This pack give you the ability to deliver a XenApp 6.5 touch-friendly interface or applications to mobile devices (iOS and Android). you can download this pack by following the link at the end of this blog (a MyCitrix account is required). Once you downloaded this pack, just unzip it, and you'll have 3 msi files : To install this pack you need to install one XenApp hotfix and one update to the Citrix Group Policy Management engine. Keep in mind, you'll need to reboot your XenApp box at the end of this update. Once everything is done and setup, don't look for change in the start menu, new tool or something like that, most of what has been added is within the Citrix AppCenter console, in the policy node (User tab) Your shared desktop should look like that after some configuration and GPO setting up : Citrix blog : http://blogs.citrix.com/2011/12/19/mobilize-your-enterprise-with-the-xenapp-6-5-mobility-pack/ Citrix XenApp Mobility Pack download link : http://citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=2317077

Citrix again made several big announcement around the Cloud Technologies. I haven't been able to fly to Barcelona this year to attend Synergy so I had to figure out how to know things without being able to go there. Citrix Synergy Live saved my Synergy :) Part 1/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Personal Cloud 1/3 Part 2/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Private Cloud 2/3 Part 3/3 Synergy Barcelona 2011 – Public Cloud 3/3 Citrix Receiver is now compatible with 1.5 billion devices now, and there is a new version (5.0) for iPads and iPhone (iOS 5 compatibility) 50% faster app launch 40% less bandwidth Multitasking Native experience for keyboard and gesture Citrix XenDesktop is the number one product to give access to desktop virtualization, after Citrix bought Kaviza, Citrix VDI-in-a-Box is now available for download here : Tech Preview (MyCitrix account required) One of the very big announcement is about App-Dna acquisition, Citrix shows how much stay focus on the application will be the most important part in xVirtualization . Personal Cloud ShareFile is a new product introduce by Citrix to being able to share files while keeping security and confidentiality. It look like a Microsoft Outlook plugin and a desktop widget, iPad application (Windows, Mac and Linux) seeing the demo, it look like a more visual-user-friendly Dropbox with a completely customizable web interface for everyone. Send, request & share files within Microsoft Outlook Mobile - your data from all your devices Desktop widget &…

This is the idea I have from time to time, and maybe Citrix are already on it, but I wanted to share this because you might want to add your own ideas to the list. Synergy in San Francisco is very soon, it might be the right time to come to some of the product managers and exchange about some of these items. XenCenter Console for iPad (and iPhone ?) XenCenter Console for Mac OSx XenServer statistics in EdgeSight Background customization back in the Citrix Receiver for iPad Free move and placement of shortcuts back in the Citrix Receiver for iPad Capacity and Power Management for vSphere and Hyper-V Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 support for EdgeSight XenClient support for MacBook hardware XenDesktop Offline Desktop in XenClient That's it for today, but I'm sure I will have some more idea very soon... I'll update this blog then.

Warning : For those who download Alcatraz before the 2nd of December 2010, please update it, same link. An issue around leaking desktop handles is affecting v0.9.0.31, when you update it you should have v0.9.0.32 Citrix announced the 29th of November 2010 a new project code name “Alcatraz“, part of the project “San Francisco” and can be combine with project “GoldenGate” (Check the end of this blog for the Citrix links about each project). The idea is simple, how to add a "lock" layer to all the published applications accessed by mobile users, how to improve "security" if a device is stolen, lost etc ? Citrix Labs try to give an answer with this new project and I think this idea is very well found. Without modifying your existing Citrix (XenApp, WebInterface, CAG etc..) architecture you can provide another authentication level before launching an application with a PIN Code request (bellow screen shot from my iPhone) To be clear, this is not a second factor authentication add-on / product for Access Gateway and Web Interface. This PIN code interface is load before the published application, once the user profile loaded. It look neat, but how does it work ? First you need to install Alcatraz msi on the XenApp servers you want to use for your tests, you can download msi packages here : https://www.citrix.com/English/SS/downloads/details.asp?downloadID=2305766&productID=186 (MyCitrix account is required) You will find one package for 32bit OS and another one for 64bit OS. All the binaries will be installed in “C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\Alcatraz” folder and you will find the following files: Then the only change you need to do is to amend or create published applications dedicated to mobile users using “C:\Program Files\Citrix\Alcatraz\Alcatraz.exe” /a “command line of published application” for the 32bit XenApp servers or “C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\Alcatraz\Alcatraz.exe” /a “command line of published application” for the 64bit XenApp servers. In the registry, you can find a part in HKLM\Software\Citrix\Alcatraz for 32bit servers and in HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Citrix\Alcatraz for 64bit servers and all the settings are explained on the project page here : http://community.citrix.com/display/xa/Getting+Started+with+Project+Alcatraz ChallengeInterval – This setting is disabled by default (set to 0). This setting will force the user to enter their pass-code after a period of time (in seconds) even if the user is interacting with the published application. (Default: Disabled) InactivityTimeout – This is the amount of time (in seconds) that a user has not interacted with their published…
